Getting there

CityCamp NYC is at Hunter College, in the North Building at 69th Street and Lexington Avenue. Enter through the North Building lobby on East 69th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues.

The majority of sessions will take place in the North Building on the Concourse (-1) level, with Lunch taking place in the West Building.

The two buildings connect by skybridge on the Third Floor over Lexington, so you can move between them without going outside. There are many elevator banks to use to navigate between the floors.

• Subway: 6 train to 68 St–Hunter College. The station exits adjacent to the campus, and it is a short walk around the corner to 69th Street and the North Building entrance.
• Bus: M101, M102, M103 on Lexington and Third; M66 and M72 crosstown; M1 through M4 on Fifth and Madison.
• Citi Bike: docks at East 68th & Lexington and East 67th & Park.
• Driving is not recommended. There is no official event parking. Paid garages are nearby if you need one.

When you arrive

1. Doors open at 9:00 AM. Go to the registration tables in the North Building lobby, first floor.
2. Give your name or confirmation code at check-in and pick up your name tag and a session pitch card. Bring a photo ID. The campus entrance may ask to see one.
3. Breakfast and coffee will be set up on the North Building Concourse Level, by the elevators, from 9:00 AM. Coffee will be refreshed throughout the day. Food and beverage are not permitted in the Assembly Hall during opening remarks, but breakfast of muffins, pastry, bagels, and fruit will remain out until sessions begin.
4. First time at an unconference? Volunteers at the Info Desk and at The Board can help you pitch an idea or find a session.

The shape of the day

Doors and registration open at 9:00 AM. Opening remarks are at 9:30 AM in the Assembly Hall, then lightning pitches and building The Board from 10:00 AM. Four Session blocks run through the day, with lunch at 1:15 PM, and closing remarks and the Civic Innovator Award at 5:00 PM.

An offsite, informal happy hour follows at Treadwell Park on first avenue.

What to bring

• A reusable water bottle. There are refill stations around campus.
• Something to take notes with. A laptop or tablet if you desire, bringing a computer is completely optional.
• A photo ID for the campus entrance.

Food & Snacks

Breakfast, coffee, lunch, and snacks are included with every ticket.

• Breakfast: pastries, muffins, bagels, fruit, coffee, and tea. North Building Concourse Level, from 9:00 AM.
• Lunch: boxed lunches in the West Building cafeteria on the 3rd floor, 1:15 to 2:15 PM. Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free, and Halal options will be available.
• All day: coffee and snacks are available.

Wi-Fi

Network: HunterGuest

1. Connect to the HunterGuest network.
2. When the sign-in page opens, tap Register for Guest account.
3. Enter your name, email, and mobile number.
4. You will get a text with a username and password. Enter those on the sign-in page.

One registration lasts the day. If you cannot connect, ask at the info desk.

Childcare

Free, professional on-site childcare is available for families who reserved a childcare ticket, run by SmartSitting. If you registered a child, watch for a separate email with drop-off and pickup details.

Childcare is in the North Building, 10th floor (rooms HN 1022 and HN 1028). Drop-off from 9:00 AM, pickup by 4:45 PM. Questions: citycamp+childcare@beta.nyc.

Accessibility

• A quiet room is open all day: C103 on the 1 Concourse level of Hunter North.
• A lactation room is available: N324 on the third floor of Hunter North.
• Service animals are always welcome.
• An All-gender restroom is available: Level 3, Thomas Hunter Hall, which is located as you navigate between the North Building and West Building. All individuals have the right to use the single sex facilities consistent with their gender identity or expression.
• Elevators: There are many elevator banks to utilize for access between floors.

Wayfinding

Health

If you are not feeling well, please stay home. We work hard to keep this a safe space for everyone. Masks are welcome and encouraged. We will distribute KF-94 masks in several sizes at registration and the info desk.

Code of Conduct

BetaNYC is committed to hosting safe and open spaces for all. Everyone at CityCamp is bound by BetaNYC’s Code of Conduct and Anti-Harassment Policy. It is not optional. If something comes up during the day, ask a volunteer in a Blue shirt to help you find a BetaNYC staff member.

Photography

CityCamp is photographed for BetaNYC’s archive and outreach. If you would rather not appear in photos, tell us at registration and we will give you a red lanyard to wear, indicating that you do not wish to be photographed.

Merch and info desk

The info desk and CityCamp merchandise are in the Lobby of the North Building, outside of the Assembly Hall.

How an unconference works

There is no schedule when you walk in. By mid-morning there is one, and you helped build it through pitching and voting.

You do not have to pitch anything. Plenty of people come to listen, join other people’s conversations, and leave with a notebook full of things they did not know that morning. That is a complete way to attend. If you do want to propose a session, you do not need to be an expert. You need a question you find interesting and a willingness to explore it with other people.

The Law of Mobility

Attendees can participate or leave sessions as they feel most comfortable. If they aren’t learning or contributing, they are welcome to leave the session and take themselves wherever they feel they need to be.

Walking out of a session is not rude at CityCamp. It is the mechanism. A room of four people who chose to be there is working. A room of fourteen where ten stayed out of politeness is not.

The four principles

1. Whoever shows up to your session are the right people. Three people who care is a good session. Attendance is not the score.
2. Whatever happens is the only thing that could happen. The conversation you get is the one this group could have. It may not be the one on your session card, and that is usually a good sign.
3. Whenever it starts is the right time. Ideas arrive when they arrive. Do not wait for the room to fill.
4. Whenever it’s over, it’s over. A session that finishes in twenty minutes is finished. Take the other forty somewhere else.

The Board

The Board is the wall where the day’s agenda gets built. Write your session idea on a session card, hand it to a BetaNYC volunteer stationed at The Board in the Concourse common area of Hunter North, and they will place it in a time slot and a room.
